By Joe Koizumi

WBA minimum champ Yutaka Niida (22-1-3, 8 KOs), 104.75, Japan, impressively kept his belt as he often landed jolting left hooks to a much taller Filipino

challenger Eriberto Gejon (23-2-1, 14 KOs), 105, over twelve heats on Saturday in Tokyo, Japan. Niida, making his sixth defense, displayed his aggressiveness and cleverness as well in controlling the second half to confirm his victory. The official scorecards read: Jean-Louis Legland (France) and Giuseppe Quartarone (Italy) both 117-112, and Chalerm Prayadsab (Thailand) 117-111, all for the 28-year-old defending champ. It was an anticipated rematch as Niida was previously awarded a split technical decision over Gejon in the tenth because of the Filipino’s nasty cut in Yokohama two years ago.
